GINDALBIE METALS - Karara Iron Ore Project - Breaking Ground!

A few weeks ago, we blogged about the news that Gindalbie’s Karara Iron Ore Project cleared its final approval hurdle with the Federal Government’s environmental approval. On Saturday, WA Premier, Colin Barnett, joined company execs and representatives from the Resource Sector, for the official ground breaking ceremony at the site.

Hundreds of Gorgon Project construction workers will live on a luxury Norwegian cruise ship.

As reported this weekend on Perth Now website, up to 350 construction workers will be accommodated on the MS Finnmarken, a 7 year old cruise ship. Moorsure - Mooring Systems Solutions, has recently completed a concept evaluation study for Hurtigruten and Jeyco to support the utilisation of the MS Finnmarken Cruise Ship as an accommodation vessel for workers involved in Chevron's Gorgon development. The ship has lounges, bars and bistro, a, a hairdresser and a beauty treatment room, a swimming pool, fitness room, sauna, solarium and outside spas. An internet cafe is on deck four.

400 Million Reasons to get a Job with Downer EDI Engineering

Downer EDI Limited (Downer) announced a few weeks ago that its Engineering division has secured more than $400 million worth of contracts including a two-year contract valued at $170 million with Wesfarmers Curragh Pty Ltd (as a significant component of the expansion of its Curragh Mine in Central Queensland) and more than $90 million worth of contracts with BHP Billiton Iron Ore at its Rapid Growth Phase 5 Project in Western Australia.

Atlas Copco, Construction and Mining Technique division develops, manufactures and markets rock drilling tools, underground rock drilling rigs for tunneling and mining applications, surface drilling rigs, loading equipment, exploration drilling equipment, and construction tools.

With 13 Branches across Australia, and approx 430 people and growing, they are a leading supplier to large infrastructure projects, including in particular power plant and transportation link construction projects, as well as global mining companies. Besides drilling rigs, Atlas Copco also manufactures rock-drilling tools, such as drill bits, rods, DTH hammers and cutters. Light rock drills, breakers, crushers and pulverizers are used for demolition. Loading equipment is used in underground mining operations and construction projects.

Alpha Coal Project Update

Hancock Coal Pty Ltd (HCPL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Hancock Prospecting Pty Ltd, is currently preparing for a Bankable Feasibility Study (BFS) – expected to be completed in mid 2011 - for the $7.5b Alpha Coal Project.

This major project includes the development of an extensive thermal coal deposit in Queensland's Galilee Basin, about 400km inland from the coast.

Legend’s Phosphate Mine Proposal to generate 2700+ direct jobs

Legend International is led by Joseph Gutnick, a prominent Australian mining industry entrepreneur, who has overseen some of Australia's largest and most prestigious resource discoveries.

The Company’s primary focus is the development of its phosphate interests in the Georgina Basin in Queensland including Paradise, Lady Jane, D-Tree, Thorntonia, Lily Creek, Quita Creek, Sherrin Creek and Highland Plains, which have combined historical deposits of more than 1 billion tonnes.

Catalpa Resources Merges with Lion Selection

The shareholders of Western Australian gold explorer Catalpa Resources last week approved the proposed merger with the gold assets of its Lion Selection.

The merger will amalgamate Lion Selection's 30% holding in Newcrest's Cracow gold project with Catalpa's 100,000 ounce per annum Edna May operation. Catalpa now gains access to 30,000 ounces per annum from the Cracow joint venture to immediately become a gold producer.

Once Edna May is commissioned in 2010, the company will be able to produce a total of around 130,000 tonnes per annum.

Otway Gas Project – Expressions of Interest

On 3 November, Origin announced that it had acquired a 51.55% interest in the Otway gas project in western Victoria from joint venture partner Woodside for $712.5m.
