About Xstrata Coal

Xstrata Coal is the world’s largest exporter of seaborne thermal coal used to generate electricity and one of the largest producers of coal used to make steel. Our headquarters are in Sydney and we have interests in over 30 open cut and underground coal mines in Australia, South Africa and Colombia and exploration projects in British Columbia, Canada.

We employ more than 17,300 people - including contractors - with the majority working out of the New South Wales Hunter Valley and Queensland’s Bowen Basin in Australia, and the Witbank area of South Africa. Our business is world scale. We produced 100.5 million tonnes of managed coal in 2011, about 85 per cent of which was exported. With an unmatched pipeline of competitive coal projects across all of our geographies, we have the potential to expand our current production by more than 50 million tonnes per annum.
