Owned by Brookfield Infrastructure Partners, Brookfield Rail is one of the few independent rail infrastructure providers in the world, and is responsible for access management, signalling and communication systems, train control and rail construction and maintenance on one of WA’s most important pieces of transport infrastructure.

Spanning an area twice the size of Great Britain, Brookfield Rail’s network extends from Geraldton in the north, to Leonora and Kalgoorlie in the east and south to Esperance, Albany and Bunbury.

Brookfield Rail’s network transports a wide range of commodities including grain, alumina, bauxite, iron ore and interstate freight – as well as passengers on the Perth to Kalgoorlie and Perth to Bunbury lines.

A lifeline in the State’s growing economy, Brookfield Rail’s network sustainably transports over 55 million tonnes of freight each year, worth in excess of AUD$20 billion.

The rail network was fundamental in opening up southern Western Australia to industries and opportunities by providing essential services, facilitating export, developing interstate connections and supporting regional communities. Nearly 100 years on, Brookfield Rail is continuing to enable growth in Western Australia.

Brookfield Rail is increasing its network capacity to meet the growing demand for open access, multi-user rail infrastructure from resource projects in Western Australia’s South West, MidWest and Yilgarn regions, along with significant projected increases in interstate freight volumes.

Freight volumes on Brookfield Rail’s network are expected to increase by approximately 45 per cent over the next two years, from 55 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) to over 80 mtpa.

Following significant historical investment in this rail system, the remaining capital costs for this expansion and network upgrade program is forecast to be approximately A$500 million over the next two years.

Our major investment projects underway include, the Eastern Goldfields Railway Freight Gateway Project, Esperance Line Upgrade & Esperance Rerailing Project, MidWest Rail Upgrade, and the Grain Rail Network Resleepering Program.
As the state’s population continues to grow, inter-state freight volumes are increasing rapidly and we are investing to meet this demand.
