Since loading our first iron ore shipment in 2008, we’ve become the third largest iron ore producer in Australia. More importantly, we are still growing rapidly and bringing new projects online. The name Fortescue is now associated with the ability to turn a vision into reality. That’s why in just a decade we’ve grown from a start-up organisation to an S&P/ASX50 company.
We always wanted to unlock the potential of the iron rich Pilbara region of Western Australia for the benefit of our many stakeholders, including shareholders, employees, communities, customers and the many businesses that support our operation. We still do, but on an even larger scale. Essential to achieving this vision is being the safest, lowest cost and most profitable iron ore producer.
Our initial mine, rail and port supply chain was constructed in less than two years from 2006. In our first three years of operation from 2008 we progressed from loading our first ore onto a ship to earning revenue of $5.5 billion. That growth was no mean feat, and it certainly demonstrated the capability of our team and the commitment of our contractors and suppliers.
To put it in perspective, it took our competitors four decades to export the same amount of iron ore that we shipped in our first three years.
Our company is led by talented and experienced mining industry executives. It is one of the reasons we have consistently been able to deliver on our vision.
We are a close-knit team. From senior management to site employees, our people know they can draw on each other’s skills and they can rely on their colleagues to deliver when needed. For this reason we refer to our team as the ‘Fortescue family’.
It’s in our interest to make sure we maintain the family feel of Fortescue. So we spend a lot of time and effort on this. We make sure our employees are challenged, valued and rewarded - all at the same time.
