A major round up of Australian mining projects

We follow on from our extensive overview of oil and gas projects last week, with 17 individual project updates in the mining sector. The list is not exhaustive, but provides an indication of project timeframes, and current and future job opportunities. We start with the Worsley Alumina Efficiency and Growth Project in Western Australia and conclude with the Melbourne Desalination Plant.

Project Boomerang, Western Australia and Queensland

  • Location: Comprises a new 3,370km trans Australian railway from Port Hedland, Western Australia to Moranbah, in the central Queensland coal fields, as well as 6 or more steel smelters on both coasts (12 or more in total), associated port facilities and infrastructure to support the project.

A major round up of Oil and Gas Projects

Up until the last quarter of 2008, 142,000 people in Australia’s workforce were directly employed in resources. This number was up by a massive 55,400 jobs over the last five years. Even with job losses across the industry now totalling some 20,000, these losses are coming off the back of unprecedented growth and still don’t have the industry back at its original employment levels of five years ago.

Inpex Ichthys Field, Northern Territory

  • Operators: Inpex Browse Ltd (76%, the Operator) and Total E&P Australia (24%)Corporation
  • Location: Middle Arm Peninsula at Blaydin Point in Darwin Harbour, and offshore Darwin
  • Timeframe: Final investment decision expected in 2010 and first LNG shipment scheduled for 2015
  • Cost: US$20b

Making First Impressions Count

Recruiters are often asked to provide feedback on why a person was unsuccessful in gaining an interview.

First impressions are very important, as we all know, so why is it that people do not think about this when submitting a resume?

Your resume is your "foot in the door" so to speak, and generally the first contact between yourself and the company's recruitment department so it is imperative that your resume is set out well and is designed to catch the eye of the recruiter.

The first rule of Interview Preparation

Just before Christmas, I was sitting in the reception of one of Australia’s largest mining organisations and whilst I was waiting for my own appointment, observed some ordinary candidate etiquette....namely, rocking up to the receptionist and not knowing the name of the person in recruitment he/she was booked to see.

Universities collaborate to provide industry engineering programs

A new collaborative approach between four major universities will ensure continued delivery of world-class Petroleum Engineering programs in Australia.

Prompted by the loss of significant numbers of engineering academics returning to industry since 2007, Adelaide University, Curtin University, University of NSW and University of WA have proposed a comparable collaborative initiative in petroleum engineering (‘Petroleum Engineering Australia’).

What you should know about oil and gas industry job opportunities

A bit about the oil and gas industry
The oil and gas industry is an exciting, international, vibrant, skilled and varied industry to work for. It works with often cutting edge technology and has an excellent safety and health record; but it also operates in often remote locations, difficult climates and high risk environments.

Liquefied natural gas, or LNG, is the big growth area for the oil and gas industry in Australia with as many as 12 LNG projects under consideration representing over $200 billion of investment. LNG has triggered a revolution in the global gas market.
