Perth Desalination Plant

Western Australia led the way in 2006 with Australia's first desalination plant just south of Perth.

In May 2007, the government announced that a new $955m desalination plant will be built near Binningup, near the Shire of Harvey.

On 5 February this year, the Minister for Environment announced that the project will now move to the final approvals process.

Oakajee Port and Rail Pty Ltd (OPR) is planning to construct a deepwater port at Oakajee, 25km north of Geraldton, serviced by an extensive new rail network. This major new infrastructure development will generate thousands of jobs during the construction phase, underpin the growth of the local iron ore industry and help unlock the value of Western Australia's mid-west.

Good News for Downer

Downer EDI has announced it will create as many as 400 jobs when it starts developing infrastructure at the Xstrata Coal Mangoola Mine in the Upper Hunter Valley region in New South Wales.  The Company's engineering division won an 18 month contract for the work, which is worth nearly $500m.  The contract includes civil, structural and mechanical process design and development work for the coal handling and preparation plant, as well as the electrical and instrumentation and control areas of the operation.

Inside Woodside

By the end of 2008, Woodside's workforce had grown to 3,124; a 5% increase from 2007 with 589 new hires.  One testament to how employees enjoy the company they work for is often reflected in the voluntary turnover rate.  During a boom period of significant skill shortage (which was the majority of 2008), Woodside had an extremely attractive 9%, which is low for industry standards.

Modules and equipment are starting to arrive at site now and we anticipate that trades and labour will be required shortly.  Ausclad have advised that they hope to have a signed contract by the end of the month, but no further details are provided at this stage.  We will keep you posted.  We've featured Ausclad - and their growth - a number of times recently.

Gladstone LNG

Gladstone LNG Pty Ltd (a Western Australian company) proposes to develop a mid-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant at Fisherman's Landing Wharf (FLW) near Gladstone in Queensland.  Gladstone is becoming a major development hub for such projects with three other similar projects slated  for the area, including the Santos LNG project.

The Gladstone LNG proposal has an expected life of 25 years and the first stage would produce up to 1.5 million tonnes of LNG per year. A proposed second stage would double the capacity within three years of Stage 1.
