Leighton announced this week that it had won a contract extension worth about $400 million to provide mining services to one of BHP Billiton's iron ore mines at Newman.

HWE Mining, a wholly owned subsidiary of Leighton, has won the contract extension to provide mining services to the orebody 23/25 iron ore mine.

HWE has been the major mining services provider to the mine for more than 10 years.

The Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group (NCIG) was formed in 2004 to address fundamental capacity issues (rail and port) associated with coal handling for regional coal exporters in New South Wales.

The members of NCIG are significant coal producers who have sufficient coal reserves and projects to materially increase their aggregate coal production by at least 30 million tonnes during the next five to ten years.

Western Australia led the way in 2006 with Australia's first desalination plant just south of Perth.

In May 2007, the government announced that a new $955m desalination plant will be built near Binningup, near the Shire of Harvey.

On 5 February this year, the Minister for Environment announced that the project will now move to the final approvals process.

A multi-national consortium, AdelaideAqua has been named as the preferred bidder for construction of the water desalination plant at Port Stanvac, south of Adelaide.  The consortium of four companies - Acciona Agua, United Utilities, McConnell Dowell and Abigroup Contractors - has extensive world-wide desalination experience and strong environmental credentials.

Together they will design, build, operate and maintain the plant for 20 years.
