Chevron’s Wheatstone project continues to gain momentum with the second major work contract awarded in a week.

Thiess has won a $60 million dollar contract to construct a 1.2 kilometre long tunnelled shore crossing under the ocean which will connect two offshore gas reserves with Chevron’s greenfield LNG plant at Ashburton North near Onslow in the state’s north west.

Thiess already has a major role with Chevron in delivering its Gorgon LNG project, specifically in its joint venture with Decmil/Kentz (TDKJV) to design and construct an accommodation construction village on Barrow Island.

The Wheatstone shore crossing micro-tunnel will be 2.5 metres in diameter and will be delivered by tunnel boring machine and lined by the pipe jacking method. The micro-tunnel will accommodate a 1.1 metre diameter pipeline to deliver gas from Chevron’s Wheatstone and Iago reserves.

Thiess will now focus on engaging local suppliers and subcontractors.

Engineering and procurement commences immediately for the design of the TBM launch shaft, jacking pipes, and TBM retrieval pit. Construction on site however, will not commence until after the cyclone season in 2013.  The Resource Channel will keep you abreast of career opportunities as the time approaches.
