Southern Cross Electrical Engineering  (SCEE) has this week been awarded two major work contracts on Australian mining projects.

The first is a $29m contract for Rio Tinto’s Yandi power supply work in the Pilbara.

The engineering company will provide the second portion of the Yandi Sustaining Project, which will see it design, supply, and construct a 33kV distribution overhead line.

Under the agreement, SCEE will upgrade the existing 33kV overhead line distribution that supplies Rio' mine facilities from its Yandi 220kV switchyard.

SCEE's subsidiary KJ Johnson & Co will carry out the work.  The work is scheduled for completion in January 2014.

The second is a $40m contract for the Tropicana Gold Project.

SCEE was awarded the Electrical, Instrumentation, Communication and Process Control Plant Infrastructure package.

The remote greenfield project is located 330 kilometres east-north-east of Kalgoorlie and is expected to produce an average of 330,000-350,000 ounces of gold per annum over the life of the mine. The project development requires considerable supporting infrastructure including a new 11kv overhead powerline. The powerline installation will be constructed by SCEE’s specialist infrastructure business, SCEE Infrastructure.

Work will commence immediately on the project and conclude in May 2013.

SCEE employ electrical trades, engineers and specialists, and have regular intakes of apprentices and trainees during the year.
