The recent economic climate has meant changes for many of us, but it isn’t necessarily doom and gloom everywhere you look. As a Recruitment Consultant for United Group Resources, I have noticed that, contrary to some sectors, shutdown and construction work in the oil and gas industry continues strongly.

However, whilst we currently have many positions on offer, the recession has also delivered an abundance of applicants who have been displaced from other industries. To help consultants who are ‘time poor’, and to give you the best chance of standing out from the pack, the following are a few tips to improve your application status:

  • When applying for a position, always submit an up-to-date resume. Ensure your contact details, and the details of referees are current and correct.
  • Good clear copies of trade papers, certificates, inductions and tickets relevant to the position should be attached to the resume if possible (and especially if requested in the advertisement).
  • If there is a need to leave a voicemail, always try to leave a message that includes name and contact number. We would love to help everyone, but it is hard to call you back if you don’t leave your name or number! (If your work does not permit for calls during the day, try to leave an email contact or someone we can talk to on your behalf).
  • ‘Expressions of Interest’ are a good way for us to gauge the market and our ability to resource our projects successfully. Please understand that the timing around ‘EOIs’ may be longer than with a specific role, and the team will always provide you with relevant information as soon as it is available. EOIs are a great way for us to know about you in advance, so always send through your details if you are interested.

A Point to Consider

For each position advertised, we now receive hundreds of applications. To help us help you, provide all information requested, and ensure your application is in a user-friendly format (Word.doc or PDF).

Your application is your first impression, so it’s best to make it a good one!
