The Sino Iron project has taken another giant leap forward with its first massive grinding mill placed on its concrete foundation. The first ball mill and Autogenous Grinding (AG) mill arrived last month to the project’s port from China already pre-assembled. The mills are the largest and most powerful of their kind in the world, with the AG mill featuring a 28MW wraparound motor.
The ball mill was transported 30Kms on a series of self-propelled modular transporters from the port to the processing plant area. This major undertaking was completed on schedule and without incident thanks to the efforts of many teams involved. The AG mill remains at the port laydown area until its concrete foundation is completed in April. It weighs twice as much as the ball mill, and will need an extra modular transporter unit to make the same journey. The grinding mills are the powerhouse of the processing plant, and there will be six ball mills and six AG mills in total to grind the project’s magnetite into a fine talcum-like powder.
