This month we were excited to be awarded the Premier’s Industry Collaboration Award for our Coal Seam Gas to Liquefied Natural Gas Training Centre, a joint venture with SkillsTech Australia.
The Award recognises “outstanding collaboration, providing exemplary skills development between an employer or industry body with another organisation”. Our collaboration with SkillsTech at Acacia Ridge in Brisbane provides a much needed solution for the skills shortage in the CSG to LNG sector. In an Australian-first for the industry, we work together to bridge the gap for tradespeople who do not have the specific skills required to work in the industry.
To ensure the trainees receive real-life, hands-on training, we donated equipment to SkillsTech Australia so they could replicate the ‘in field’ working environment, systems and processes of a typical Santos GLNG coal seam gas well site. This equipment includes compressors, components, pumping equipment, separators, drive-heads, spooling, powerpacs and various specialised hand tools.
Our field experts share our 15 years of coal seam gas operations experience, knowledge, and expertise with the SkillsTech Australia trainers to ensure the apprentices receive the most comprehensive training possible. One of those trainers is Santos Operations Supervisor – Training, John Chambers, who accepted the Award on behalf of Santos GLNG.
“The Centre really increases the capability to deliver training and provide up-skilling for people who want to join the industry and it’s great to see individuals learn new skills and start working in the field,” Mr Chambers said.
“It’s rewarding to work on a Project with such wide-ranging benefits. It’s been a real team effort in establishing and running the Centre, and one which will serve the industry for years to come.”
As a state winner in the 2012 Queensland Training Awards, we’re now in the running for for the Australian Training Awards. The Australian Training Awards are hosted by the Australian Government and are the peak national awards for the vocational education and training sector, recognising and rewarding organisations and individuals for their outstanding contribution to skilling Australia.
