Priority Occupations Identified for Queensland’s Energy Sector

With the number of major CSG/LNG projects proposed for Queensland, generating some 18,000 jobs, Energy Skills Queensland, through the formation of the Queensland CSG/LNG Skills Taskforce is working with industry to develop workforce planning and development strategies.

Energy Skills Queensland leads energy industry and government engagement on vocational education and training, skills development and labour market issues and is the recognised Centre of Excellence for Strategic Industry Workforce Planning and Workforce Development for the Energy Industry. Energy Skills Queensland was established by the Queensland Government.

Their proposal will advise the Queensland government of the skill requirements, numbers of workers required to be trained and locations where the training needs are likely to occur.

The following job roles will be required in large numbers to supply the coal seam gas/liquefied natural gas industry going forward and will be a focus of the Workforce Plan:

  • DRILLING ASSISTANTS (Certificate II in Drilling Oil and Gas Onshore)
  • PRODUCTION TECHNICIANS (Certificate III in Process Plant Operations)
  • MAINTENANCE TECHNICIANS (Certificate III in Engineering; Mechanical Trade)
  • ELECTRICAL AND INSTRUMENTATION TECHNICIANS (Certificate III in Electrotechnology – Maintenance Systems and Instrumentation)
  • LOGISTICS TECHNICIANS/ADMINISTRATORS (Certificate III in Transport and Logistics)

The following professional and para-professional occupations will also be required:

  • PETROLEUM AND MECHANICAL ENGINEERS (Bachelor of Engineering)
  • GEOLOGISTS AND GEOPHYSICISTS (Bachelor of Geology, Bachelor of Geophysics)

Energy Skills Queensland is establishing Energy Skills Solutions – an information service for individuals and employers seeking advice on training and skilling issues.

Energy Skills Solutions will become a vital source for information and advice on skills and training opportunities for career entry and progression within the energy sector, providing specific assistance to job seekers and existing workers gain qualifications.

will provide individuals with the following services:

  • Career advice on employment and workforce development opportunities.
  • Skills evaluation to identify and match skills to qualifications.
  • Referral advice to Registered Training Organisations for skills assessment and recognition.
  • Gap training advice on services provided by Registered Training Organisations.
  • Advice on regulatory requirements including licensing and permits.

Energy Skills Solutions will be officially opened at the Electro Industry Skills Centre, Rocklea on 18 November by the Minister for Education and Training.
