Offshore oil and gas production began in the 1940's, off the coast of Louisiana in the United States. Advancements in technology have expanded the industry to deeper water. Over the last six decades, offshore production has increased significantly. Currently, approximately 30 percent of world oil and gas production comes from offshore.
Fixed platforms were initially used for the offshore development, but as the fields have gone deeper, floating production facilities have become the main solution for the offshore production. There are mainly four types of floating production facilities; Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessels, Tension Leg Platforms (TLPs), Spars and Production Semi-Submersibles.
Approximately 130 FPSOs, 20 TLPs, 15 Spars, 40 Production Semi-Submersibles and 90 Floating Storage and Offloading (FSO) vessels are in operation worldwide.
Founded in 1968, Mitsui Ocean Development and Engineering Co Ltd (MODEC) is a general contractor specialising in engineering, procurement, construction and installation of floating production systems including Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessels, Floating Storage and Offloading (FSO) vessels, Tension Leg Platforms (TLPs), Production Semi-Submersibles, Mobile Offshore Production Units (MOPUs) and other new technologies which will meet the challenges of various types of gas production floaters.
Headquartered in Tokyo, Japan with some 2,000 employees in more than 25 countries like Houston, Singapore, Australia, Brazil and Belgium, MODEC provides Floating Production System operation and maintenance services around the world.
MODEC's first growth stage involved the design and construction of offshore construction vessels. In the mid-70s, MODEC began constructing jack-up drilling rigs.
The first contract for a Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel came in 1985 and in 1986 MODEC began operating the unit. Since that first FPSO contract, MODEC has been awarded more than 25 additional FPSO/Floating Storage and Offloading (FSO) EPC projects and provides Operation and Maintenance for FPSOs throughout the world.
MODEC has developed a proprietary Semi-Submersible design called the Central Pontoon Semi (CP Semi) for use as a production platform. The patented CP Semi design has been model tested and has been Approved in Principle by the American Bureau of Shipping. The CP Semi design was further developed in 2007 to be used in a dry tree application in mild environments such as Brazil, West Africa and Southeast Asia.
