In 1907, Reuben C Baker developed a casing shoe that revolutionised cable tool drilling, followed in 1909 by Howard R Hughes’ introduction of the first roller cutter bit that dramatically improved the rotary drilling process.
Over the next eight decades, Baker International and Hughes Tool Company became global leaders in well completions, drilling tools and related services. The two companies merged in 1987 to form Baker Hughes Incorporated.
Whilst many organisations make claims about their level of innovation, it is well founded with Baker Hughes whose technologists have been awarded more than 7,500 patents over the years, suggesting a highly innovative work environment for engineers and scientists.
