The Northern Territory government last week accepted Inpex’s Industry Participation Plan, which details its commitment to providing significant opportunity for local employment and to local businesses.

The plan identifies employment and training opportunities for Territorians and helps local businesses to participate in the project during the construction and operation stage. This will give Territory businesses the capacity to compete against national and international companies in the energy sector.

The direct and indirect contributions to the Territory, in jobs and business opportunities, will be significant during construction and during the estimated 40-year life of the project.

The Industry Participation Plan will:

  • Form a steering committee of Inpex representatives and NT Government officials;
  • Use the Northern Territory Industry Capability Network (NTICN) as the primary source of
    identifying businesses. Businesses are urged to register with NTICN at www.inpex.icn.org.au;
  • Give preference to businesses that have a large proportion of Australian labour and materials;
  • Identify employment opportunities for locals.

In a statement released by the company, Inpex acknowledges that the Ichthys project is the single largest private investment in the Territory’s history and will result in jobs for more than 2,000 people at the peak of construction and create about 300 new, ongoing jobs. Already, Inpex has spent more than $10 million in the Territory ahead of the final investment decision.

The Front End Engineering and Design work for the project is underway, the Environmental Impact Statement is in the process of being finalised, the company has established an office in Darwin, a Memorandum of Understanding has been signed with the Larrakia people, and the site of a workers’ village has been identified.
