This week, Macmahon was awarded an $86 million contract from Gindalbie Metals to construct a service rail line for the Karara iron ore project in Western Australia.
The company will complete the rail earthworks and track-laying to build an 85 km spur line from Karara to Tilley Siding, where it will join the existing Morawa to Geraldton line.
The track will be supplied by Chinese steel producer and Karara partner Ansteel.
This further complements the work Macmahon has undertaken in rail construction for BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto and more recently for the NSW Government extending railway infrastructure for Sydney’s western suburbs.
Macmahon subsidiary MVM Rail will also carry out components of the contract, specifically track-laying work.
This is the first of a number of major construction, equipment and services contracts totalling some $300m that Gindalbie is expected to award in the next few months. These contracts including this one with Macmahon will indicate where the bulk of the jobs will be required.
The Karara project is located 500 km north-east of Perth and 225 km east of Geraldton in Western Australia’s Mid-West region.
