Introducing Rio Tinto’s latest Greenfield Operation – Brockman 4

Brockman 4 is Rio Tinto Iron Ore’s latest Greenfield mine operation, with initial pre-strip mining already underway and commissioning expected to commence by May. Located 26km south west of the Brockman/Nammuldi mine in the West Pilbara, Brockman 4 has an estimated mine life of over 20 years at a 22 mtpa mining rate.

The mine is supported by a six-bay heavy equipment workshop, a fixed plant maintenance workshop, tyre maintenance facilities, light vehicle workshops, warehouse and equipment storage compound, explosive storage facilities, integrated process and portable water systems and a diesel storage facility with heavy and light equipment refuelling docks. The site also includes an integrated mine operations centre comprising of administration offices, training, coffee and meal areas, communications room, conference and meeting rooms, combined plant and pit operations control room and a first aid ambulance post.

Brockman 4 is a truck and shovel operation with a brand new fleet of Komatsu 830E’s, Caterpillar, Hitachi and Le Tourneau equipment. Processing is via a two stage dry plant, including a primary jaw crusher, two secondary cone crushers, screening and sample stations feeding two stackers. A slewing bucket wheel reclaimer feeds an automated train load out system.

The village consists of over 400 air conditioned rooms, each with a bedroom, bathroom and work desk. Rooms include a king single bed, telephone, fridge, internet connection and TV set with commercial free-to-air channels, Foxtel and in-house videos. Due to the even time roster, accommodation will be via a dedicated permanent shared room allocation with an employee on the opposite panel.

Village facilities include a dry mess, wet mess, 25m swimming pool, fitness centre, golf driving range and sports courts which have been modelled on the Hope Downs complex and other Pilbara FIFO facilities.

With the latest equipment, modern accommodation and brand new leisure facilities, our mission is to build a team dedicated to bringing in experience and opportunity to this new mine, whilst working a lifestyle roster and maintaining a strong commitment to safety and supporting and developing people to achieve their best.
