Nickel West Indigenous Participation Strategy

 At BHP Billiton Nickel West we encourage a diverse workforce with equal opportunities for all employees.  An element of our approach to workplace diversity is our Indigenous Participation Strategy.

In alignment with ‘Closing the Gap’ initiatives, BHP Billiton Nickel West has implemented a strategy that aims to address employment balance at our operations.

To kick it all off, BHP Billiton Nickel West is in the process of facilitating our ‘Tamalarri’ Work Readiness Program. Tamalarri is a Western Desert word meaning: Standing Ready.

This program is for local Aboriginal job seekers to gain the skills, training and capabilities needed to sustain employment at BHP Billiton Nickel West. 

The program will commence in June 2011. The course consists of a six-week training program involving three elements: ’Myself’, ‘Myself and My Work’ and ‘My Work’, followed by eight weeks on-the-job training giving the participants the chance to experience working life.

Our intention is that after the participants have completed the 14 week program, we will have a pool of talented people trained and ready to enter full-time roles within BHP Billiton Nickel West.
