Ichthy’s enjoys a big FEED

Located in the Browse Basin offshore north-west Australia, the Ichthys Project is a joint venture between INPEX (owning 76% as operator) and Total (owning the remaining 24%).

Named after the classical Greek word for fish, this project is estimated to produce 12.8 tcf of gas and 527 million barrels of high value condensate.

When complete, the Ichthys Project will consist of semi-submersible central processing facility (CPF), an inter connected floating, production, storage and offtake (FPSO) vessel, 885km of subsea pipeline and a two train onshore LNG facility on Darwin’s Middle Arm Peninsula.

Gas from the Ichthys Field will undergo preliminary processing at the offshore CPF to remove water and raw liquids, including a large proportion of the condensate. This condensate will be pumped to the FPSO facility anchored nearby, from which it will be transferred to tankers for delivery to markets.

The gas will be transported from the CPF through a subsea pipeline more than 885 kilometres to the onshore LNG processing plant proposed for Blaydin Point on Middle Arm Peninsula, Darwin, Northern Territory. It will be cooled to below minus 161 degrees Celsius, the point at which the gas becomes a liquid, known as liquefied natural gas.

The Ichthys Project will have an initial capacity to produce 8.4 million tonnes of LNG per annum and approximately 1.6 million tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) per annum, as well as 100,000 barrels of condensate per day at peak.

The sheer scope and size of the project will introduce a wealth of jobs plus training and business opportunities to Perth and Darwin. These will include specific training and career programs for Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders, created in consultation with local leaders.

This monumental infrastructure development is currently in the front-end engineering design phase (FEED). This is a critical project development phase in which plans for onshore and offshore facilities are defined, designed and evaluated in detail.
