Hot tips for Monadelphous graduate job applicants

  1. Professional(ise) your contact details. Ensure your email address is sensible (for example use your name as the email address, rather than a nickname), list two contact phone numbers on which you can be contacted and ensure you have voicemail and that your voicemail message clearly states your name.
  2. Tailor your resume to the job. Get to the point quickly and clearly and leave out unnecessary information. A cover letter is not required so this leaves you with more time to concentrate on addressing the criteria outlined in the advert and to ensure your resume is accurate.
  3. Show off. Don’t be afraid to sound like you are bragging about yourself. If you have a healthy academic transcript and have completed vacation employment, include it in your resume. And don’t forget to attach copies of your academic transcript!
  4. Examples of your capabilities may be hidden. Have you been employed casually or part time? Volunteered for committees? Played sport? Traveled? Enjoy building things? Or even enjoy taking things apart? These demonstrate commitment, discipline, organisation skills, initiative, practicality, teamwork and the ability to work autonomously. Mention these experiences and hobbies as they show attributes an employer is looking for.
  5. Watch your social networking and what is says about you. Be mindful of your online profile as well as giving consideration to what is appropriate behaviour at careers fairs or industry events where potential employers are in attendance.
  6. Never burn your bridges. If you are upset at being overlooked for a role, do not take it out on the recruiter via a derogatory email or phone call. If you are confused as to why your application wasn’t successful, find a quiet time to call the company and learn how you could improve your application. You learn how to make it better and the employer learns that you are someone who wants to learn. They may even prioritise your application for the next position - and who knows - that next position may become available quickly.
  7. Be clear about the direction in which you would like your career to go. Ensure this direction matches the role you are applying for and the company you are applying to. If successful, you will enjoy a long and fruitful career with an employer that is willing to develop your potential and give you the experience you want.
