Recruitment is still at the forefront for some resource companies, so what makes everyone different? What is that one deciding factor that makes you want to move to another company or site?
On a recent trip to Rio Tinto’s new iron ore mine site – Hope Downs 4 (HD4), I had many of these questions answered.
Speaking with the GM – Jacques van Tonder, I firsthand witnessed his passion and drive to make HD4 an operation that would boast technology, innovation, comfort, lifestyle and a culture of achievement.
Currently under construction and due to become operational in 2013, HD4 is located 35 kilometres north of Newman. Offering an 8 days on, 6 days off, 7 nights on, 7 days off FIFO roster for all operational staff, it caters for those looking for a more family friendly lifestyle.
I was lucky enough to get my own personal tour of the new camp facilities and mine site and was very impressed by what I saw.
The commitment and dedication of those involved in setting up the new greenfield site was clearly visible and their enthusiasm infectious. Incorporating next generation technologies, the equipment on site is designed to achieve operational excellence and make life easier for those working at HD4. Did I mention they have a mobile equipment workshop on wheels?
I think it’s fair to say I was equally impressed by the new village and amenities currently under construction, intended to provide workers with modern facilities whilst on shift. With spacious rooms, equipped gym, recreational room, wet mess, vast dry mess and multiple sporting facilities, it is sure to highlight what makes it different.
As the site ramps up, recruitment is in overdrive searching for skills varying from Engineers, Trades, Operators and Supervisors looking to make a difference and work on something new.
As stated by Jacques, “opportunities like these don’t come by very often and I was fortunate enough to be approached to work on this project and start a greenfield mine from the start. The most exciting thing for me personally is seeing something that’s on a piece of paper actually materialising on site.”
The site offers something new for everyone, whether it’s spending more time with the family and working a shorter roster, career development, training, the chance to work on something new or simply excitement in seeing a mine develop from the ground up.
Meeting with the dedicated leadership team, their commitment to their employees and project was evident and each displayed years of knowledge and fervour for their day-to-day job.
