“We’ve secured world class buyers for our gas.  There’s been a lot of interested buyers knocking on our door from all over the world.”

As Supply Planning and Optimisation Manager for the Santos GLNG Project, Matt Wallach is responsible for the team that sets the strategy for selling GLNG’s gas to the world.

With 20 years commercial experience in the petroleum industry, Matt’s role is to optimise the gas supply from the well-head to the customer overseas generating the greatest economic return.

“Our Project is going to represent a sizable export earner for Queensland and Australia,” Matt said.

“In the first quarter of this century, LNG demand is predicted to grow from 100 million tonnes to more than 400 million tonnes over 25 years.

“Most of this demand is coming from the Pacific region and particularly from Asia and developing countries who are changing the way they live.

“We’ve secured world class buyers for our gas.  There’s been a lot of interested buyers knocking on our door from all over the world.

“We’ve committed our gas volumes on a long-term basis to our two project partners, Kogas and Petronas.  Kogas is a Korean company that is the largest buyer of LNG in the world and Petronas will use the large supply they have purchased from us for domestic use in Malaysia.

“I love that my job sits at the hub of the Project and the vast array of work I do - from technical matters, to handling our domestic and international portfolio.

“There are only a handful of firms in the world that are converting coal seam natural gas to LNG for international export. We are truly building a new business.”

The Project has significantly grown from just 300 people when Matt first joined to more than 2000 people today. It is expected there will be more than 6000 people employed by GLNG during the peak construction phase.

Matt has worked on LNG projects with offices in Darwin, PNG and London however says there is nothing like being able to do the job you love in one of the best locals in the world – Queensland.

“When I am not at work I love sailing. I really love being at sea. It never gets old.”
