Operators (the term commonly used in the industry to identify who the operator of a mine site or oil and gas operation is) sometimes outsource components of the operation to a contracting partner. This might include maintenance, camp site management or the actual operation itself (resource extraction and production).
This month, we’ve seen Downer EDI awarded an $800m contract to provide mining services for private collier TEC Coal's Queensland mine (ie resource extraction and production).
The five-and-a-half-year contract involves Downer EDI providing full mine management at TEC Coal's Meandu mine in southeast Queensland, including planning, drilling and overburden removal, coal mining and processing, and maintenance of mobile and fixed plant.
Operational Contractors like Downer EDIoften employ workforces for operations. These workforces are usually permanent in nature and attract similar terms and conditions as other permanent employees in the industry. As an employee, you work on the Operator’s site but you are employed by the contracting entity.
The types of jobs generated under this arrangement are for engineers, drillers, mobile and fixed plant operators, electrical and mechanical trades.
