Don’t miss apprenticeship deadline

Are you an experienced trade worker, but can’t get a job in the resources sector because you don’t have the right qualifications?

Then why not upskill with a well-paid adult apprenticeship through construction and contract mining company, Macmahon.

The National Apprenticeships Program (NAP) is recruiting the first of 200 advanced entry Heavy Vehicle Mobile Equipment apprenticeships for Macmahon, and urges talented Perth workers to apply, including auto mechanics.

“Applications close early next week, so don’t miss out on this unique chance to gain a full or dual trade qualification,” urged Program Director Alan Sparks.

The apprenticeships are a Federally funded initiative and allow skilled Australian workers to complete trade training, potentially within 18 months.

The diesel fitting positions are based out of Perth.

Ideal applicants, mostly aged between 25 and 45, include people who have partly completed an apprenticeship; permanent Australian residents with overseas qualifications not yet recognised in Australia; ex-members of the defence forces with aligned qualifications or skills; people with other related trade qualifications; and trades assistants for the construction and engineering trades only.

The Program will rigorously assess the skills applicants already have and fill the gaps to secure full trade qualifications, graduating participants more quickly than a traditional apprenticeship.

“The critical factor with this program is that qualifications gained through this program are competency-based, not time-based; and outcomes are without compromise,” Mr Sparks said.

He urges anyone who believes they may qualify to register online at www.nationalapprenticeships.com.au

NAP is already providing much-needed skilled workers for projects in Central Queensland, and Gladstone in particular.

Construction giant Bechtel Australia is in the process of filling 400 NAP positions at three LNG projects in Gladstone, while Anglo American’s Metallurgical Coal business has engaged adult apprentices in Central Queensland since August last year.

Expressions of interest are also being sought in all NAP trades - Electrical Fitter Mechanic, Dual Trade Electrical/Instrumentation, Fabrication Trade - Boiler Maker/Welder/Pipe Fitters, Engineering Diesel Fitter, Mechanical Fitter and Carpentry Formworkers.

“We believe there is a vast pool of talented Australians in Perth who fit the selection criteria,” said Mr Sparks.
