Decmil wins contract to build Fortescue Village

Decmil Group has won a $28m contract to build accommodation for Fortescue in the Pilbara.

Construction of the 200 person rail camp (with the option to increase to 514 rooms), including accommodation rooms, wet mess, gym and recreational and administration facilities, will begin in coming months, with a completion date scheduled for the second quarter of the year.

The camp will be based south of Port Hedland as part of Fortescue's T155 Rail Expansion program.

This contract is the latest in a series the company is completing for Fortescue, which includes the construction of an airstrip and a 1,600 person village at Christmas Creek.

Decmil Australia has provided engineering, construction, maintenance and industrial services to the resources industry for more than 30 years and has been associated with nearly every mining and energy project in North West Australia.

Founded in 1979, Decmil Australia initially provided construction contracting in the Pilbara region of Western Australia from its office in Karratha.

In 1984, Decmil established a Perth office, and in June 2007 the company was sold to a public company listed on the Australian Securities Exchange that was to become Decmil Group Limited.

Decmil hires plumbers, electricians, carpenters and general building trades together with civil and project engineers and support functions.

To support its FIFO workforce, Decmil has recently launched FIFO Support Seminars.

Recognising that families experiencing the Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) work lifestyle are faced with a set of challenges that many families are ill prepared for, they’ve introduced the seminars to provide support and strategies to assist employees, their partners and families manage FIFO lifestyle issues.

Seminars deal with:

  • The reality of the benefits and disadvantages of a FIFO work life
  • Holding onto the ‘fun stuff’ in a relationship
  • Intimacy and fidelity
  • Making time for each other and yourself
  • Issues of boredom, isolation and loneliness
  • The role expectations placed on a family - the transitions for the worker (worksite culture to “domestic bliss”) and for the partner (single parent to intense couple situation)
  • Reunions and partings – the unmet expectation of both partners
  • The importance of developing effective communication skills and techniques
  • The maintenance and consistency of parenting
