Decmil – celebrates 30 years in business

It’s been a successful twelve months for Decmil, who celebrated 30 years in business in September 2009.

In October 2008, they were awarded a $115m civil works contract with Woodside’s Pluto LNG Project, followed by the $500m Gorgon joint venture contract in June to build the accommodation village on Barrow Island, off the Western Australian coast to accommodate 3,300 people during construction.

In August, they announced that they had been awarded a $36m variation for Stage 2 of BHP Billiton Iron Ore’s Port Haven accommodation village in Port Hedland. The contract includes the installation of 800 two-storey accommodation rooms and a wet mess. This variation to the original contract awarded by BHP Billiton Iron Ore to Decmil in May 2009 brings the total contract value to approximately $100 million. Stage 1 of this contract comprised the single story components for the village. The design work for Stage 2 and on-site work is expected to commence immediately.

In summary, Decmil’s current project portfolio includes: Chevron’s Gorgon Accommodation Project (part of TDK JV), work on three significant contracts for Woodside’s Pluto LNG Gas Project, BHP Billiton’s Rapid Growth Project 5 and Rio Tinto’s Brockman iron ore project.

Decmil will celebrate its 30 years in business with various events for clients and staff in Perth, Karratha and around its project sites throughout the Pilbara.

MORE ABOUT DECMIL
Decmil Australia was established in Karratha, Western Australia in 1979 when four young men Denis Criddle, Milan Babic, Sam Silla and Dino Rechichi - who were working in the Pilbara - spotted a range of opportunities when North West Shelf Venture partners decided to go ahead with building the onshore LNG plant.

Denis Criddle considers a $20 million Woodside contract for the construction of the administration complex at the North West Shelf gas plant as one of defining moments in Decmil’s history. It was their first major contract as well as their first win as an independent contractor, rather than a sub-contractor.

Decmil cites its focus on employees as a key success factor. They were one of the first sub-contracting companies to employ people on a full-time basis rather than use contractors. As well as ensuring a stable income for employees, this policy they say, has allowed the company to develop a loyal, stable workforce which meant that it was able to more easily weather the ‘boom-bust’ cycle that typically characterises resources development.

With this number of projects on the go, it’s probably no surprise then they are seeking PROJECT MANAGERS for Western Australia, offering FIFO nationally.
