BHP Billiton Update

On 21 January, BHP Billiton announced the indefinite suspension of the Ravensthorpe Nickel Operation in the south west of Western Australia, resulting in around 650 direct job losses, more with contractors.  They also announced a number of job cuts across other operations including Mount Keith, Olympic Dam and BMA Coal. 

You will then note that whilst there are 57 different jobs listed on the website for Australia, many of them state “RE-DEPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY – These roles are open to BHP Billiton employees only”.  This means that only those affected by job loss with BHP Billiton will be eligible to apply.  Only if a suitably qualified internal employee cannot be placed into the position, will external applicants be sought. 

Therefore, if you are a current BHP Billiton employee impacted by redundancy, ensure you apply to all applicable roles on line, including to job number 503776-3 with Iron Ore.  Iron Ore have a general expression of interest advert open to affected BHP Billiton employees for consideration against appropriate roles at their Port Hedland, Newman or Perth sites.  The closing date is 28 February 2009.
