Aboriginal contractors win $200m FMG deal

A $200m contract has been awarded to joint venture contracting partners, Eastern Guruma and Wirlu-murra Yindijibarndi Aborirginal Corporation (WMYAC).

The joint venture will undertake mining services work in partnership with Leighton Contractors over five years at Fortescue Metals Group's Solomon mine in the Pilbara.

WMYAC will also begin a six month earthworks package at Fortescue's Kings deposit in partnership with a major mining contractor, starting mid-year after the contractor is selected.

Australia's New Lasseter's Reef

In 1897, Lewis Harold Bell (Harry) Lasseter discovered an extensive gold bearing reef of white quartz west of Alice Springs.  Harry died before the reef could be relocated and mined, and the location of Lasseter’s Reef remains a mystery even today with the potential wealth of the find never realised.  Shortly after the original discovery, samples from Lasseter’s Reef were assayed at three ounces to the ton, a formidable find of any age.
