Two in a row for MMG Century at Mining Industry Innovation Awards

Century has made it two in a row, taking out top honours at the 2012 Queensland Mining Industry Health and Safety Conference Innovation Awards.

The mine was awarded the Innovation Award for its GET Removal Tool, a device that eliminates hot work and manual handling when changing-out Ground Engaging Tools (GET) on shovels. In addition to eliminating these activities, the device improves the efficiency of the change-out process.

Santos GLNG signs multi-million dollar construction contract with WDS

The Santos GLNG Project has signed a Construction Service Agreement valued at up-to $24million with Australian company WDS to work on the development of the Project’s gas fields.

The contract will create around 30 new jobs and provide for the establishment of a new office facility in Roma as WDS increases its capacity to carry out field installation of gathering systems to connect the coal seam natural gas wells in Santos GLNG’s Fairview, Arcadia, and Roma gas fields.

Calibre's Rio Tinto contract award will employ 800

Rio Tinto has awarded a $150m EPCM contract for its Yandicoogina iron ore mine to Calibre.

The contract is part of Rio's wider US$1.7 billion Yandicoogina Sustaining Project.

Around 800 people will be employed on the implementation phase with the project scheduled for completion in the first half of 2015.

The aim of the work is to extend the life of the iron ore mine in the Pilbara to 2012, and expand its capacity from 53 million tonnes per annum to 56 million tonnes.

Local Workers overlooked in favour of foreign skills

A new study suggests that there is a wealth of skilled Australian workers that are being overlooked in the rush to import overseas labor through various visa schemes.

That assessment was part of newly released findings from a pilot model to create a regional fly in, fly out hub in South Australia.
