Chevron Wheatstone Project to generate 6,000+ jobs

Chevron’s second major project after Gorgon now has the official go-ahead, making Western Australia the world’s second-largest supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG) behind Qatar.

The $29 billion Wheatstone LNG project was given federal environmental approval last week to proceed.

Wheatstone is a joint venture project with Chevron 73.6 per cent, Apache 13 per cent, Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Co (KUFPEC) 7 per cent, Shell Australia 6.4 per cent.

Fortescue Metals awards Thiess major mining contract

Fortescue Metals Group has awarded Thiess a $100 million contract for Phase One development works on the Solomon Hub iron ore mine in Western Australia’s Pilbara region.

The work will prepare the Solomon area for long term mining operations and is expected to take 18 months to complete.  Work will include initial pioneering and mine establishment such as haul roads, stockpile pads and the mining of early ore and waste.

Oil & Gas Operator Traineeships

Apprenticeships Australia together with Energy Apprenticeships Group is the largest employer of apprentices and trainees in Western Australia.

The Group has just launched its 2012 intake for Operator Traineeships via a structured two year program.  In the program, trainees will be in a field support role and work on a fly in fly out (FIFO) rotating roster.  Training will provide technical knowledge on hydrocarbon processing systems, skills to operate process facilities and development of mechanical aptitude.

BHP Nickel West contract awarded to Cape Crushing and Earthmoving

Cape Crushing and Earthmoving, a subsidiary of VDM Group has been awarded a $40 million contract for work at BHP Billiton Nickel West’s Kambalda nickel mine in Western Australia.

The contract for work on the mine’s nickel concentrator is in addition to Cape’s current ore haulage and services contract with BHP Nickel West.

Santos Gladstone LNG Project Update

The Clough Downer Joint Venture has been awarded the infrastructure construction contract for Santos’ GLNG project in the Surat Basin in Queensland.

Valued at $600m, the contractor build more than 400 kilometres of gas and water transmission pipelines, and two compression facilities, as well as an 800 person camp.

Expansion of the existing Fairview compression facilities also forms part of the scope.

The 61,500 new jobs in mining and 3,200 in oil and gas operations expected in the next decade represent a 40% growth in current industry employment numbers. 

 

INPEX takes the show offshore

INPEX recently attended the Offshore Europe 2011 Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition in Aberdeen, Scotland. Spanning the 6th-8th of September, this event drew a variety of international players in the oil and gas community to discuss projects, share innovations and define the future of the industry.

1,000 Adult Resource Sector Apprenticeships now open for application

The National Apprenticeships Program (NAP) for the minerals and petroleum resources sectors is seeking Expressions of Interest from applicants prepared to undertake an Advanced Entry Adult Apprenticeship and work anywhere in Australia. Expressions of Interest from overseas tradespeople whose qualification are not recognised in Australia are also encouraged to apply.

More than 1,000 advanced entry adult apprenticeships will be available, initially in Queensland and Western Australia.
