Thiess has recently secured an $800 million contract from Wesfarmers Curragh Pty Ltd to continue overburden pre-strip at its Curragh North Mine in Queensland’s Bowen Basin. The company began operations at Curragh North in October 2004 and was awarded a $260m contract extension in 2008 after exceeding production and safety targets. The new contract will see Thiess at the mine for a further ten years.

Vacation Program is no holiday!

The Clough Vacation Employment Program aims to provide outstanding university students with the opportunity to work on interesting and varied projects / scopes of work within the oil and gas and infrastructure industries.

Primarily aimed at engineering students, the program is beneficial to both students and the Company. Through the program the students are helped to meet requirements for their engineering graduation from Australian universities and the Company is potentially introducing future graduate engineers to Clough.

Sino Iron project welcomes massive grinding mills

The Sino Iron project has taken another giant leap forward with its first massive grinding mill placed on its concrete foundation. The first ball mill and Autogenous Grinding (AG) mill arrived last month to the project’s port from China already pre-assembled. The mills are the largest and most powerful of their kind in the world, with the AG mill featuring a 28MW wraparound motor.

Thiess Kentz has been awarded a site wide specialist instrumentation contract for the onshore components of Woodside’s Pluto Gas Project, located on the Burrup Peninsula, Western Australia. Work on the site will include instrument calibrations, testing of instrument loops and testing the electrical network monitoring and control system. A joint venture between Foster Wheeler and WorleyParsons is the engineering procurement and construction manager.

Santos' $50 million apprenticeship and training plan

Santos, together with our partner, PETRONAS recently unveiled a $50 million plan to generate up to 100 new apprenticeships and trainee positions to help deliver our Gladstone Liquefied Natural Gas project, GLNG®.

The plan is in the first stage of planned investment in jobs and training, providing positions in the Roma region in the State’s south west, and in Gladstone in Central Queensland.

Recognising women in resources

More than 300 people from across the Western Australian resource sector attended the Chamber of Minerals and Energy’s (WA) inaugural Women in Resources Awards held on Monday 8 March in Perth to coincide with International Women’s Day.

Celebrating the outstanding contributions of 78 nominations across three categories, the morning culminated in the surprise announcement of a ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ for Erica Smyth.

Introducing Rio Tinto’s latest Greenfield Operation – Brockman 4

Brockman 4 is Rio Tinto Iron Ore’s latest Greenfield mine operation, with initial pre-strip mining already underway and commissioning expected to commence by May. Located 26km south west of the Brockman/Nammuldi mine in the West Pilbara, Brockman 4 has an estimated mine life of over 20 years at a 22 mtpa mining rate.
