Chevron – Already Recruiting for Wheatstone Project

With all focus on their Gorgon Project, Chevron have quietly gone about ramping up their 100% owned Wheatstone Project, which is set to become one of Australia’s largest resource projects. Discovered in August 2004, Chevron announced their plans in March 2008 to develop the gas resource at a Greenfield onshore LNG and domestic gas project.

Ashburton North, in north Western Australia, has been selected as the LNG hub given its proximity to all the discovered gas resources in the Western Carnarvon Basin.

FMG - The New Force in Iron Ore

This week, FMG released a business update. Highlights include:

• 16 months now in production.
• Shipped in excess of 40 million tonnes.
• Low cost overburden system now in commissioning.
• On track to achieve 55 million tonnes before FY2011.
• Second processing plant is to be commissioned in 2010.
• Solomon project now under fast-track management, providing scope for enormous growth.
• Strong cash position of US$704m.

Newmont Announces First Gold Pour at Boddington

Newmont Mining Corporation announced last week it’s first gold pour at its Boddington mine in Western Australia. In addition, the Company has trucked its first shipment of copper concentrate from the mine to the port in Bunbury. The event marked the commencement of gold production at Boddington after the first production of copper concentrate in August.

Flinders Mines - Another player in WA's small cap iron ore industry

Only a couple of years ago, Flinders Mines (formerly Finders Diamonds) had a focus on diamond deposits in Western Australia and South Australia. All that changed in November 2007 when Flinders announced the discovery of a major iron ore target in land adjoining Fortescue Metals Group’s Serenity deposit in the Hamersley Ranges of Western Australia.

Boart Longyear – new business, new jobs

Boart Longyear is the world’s leading integrated drilling services provider and products manufacturer for the minerals industry, also with a substantial presence in the environment, infrastructure and energy industries.

Now employing 9,500 people across two divisions – Drilling Services and Products Division – the Company was originally owned by Anglo American, but sold in 2005. Since that time, the Company has undergone significant restructuring and substantial investment in expanding operations and services.

Balmoral South Iron Ore Project Update

This week, Australasian Resources released its Environmental Protection Authority’s Report and Recommendations (EPA Report) on the Project’s Public Environmental Review.

The release of the report – the outcome of extensive environmental surveys and investigations - is a major milestone for the project and marks a significant step towards developing the project into a world-class iron ore venture.

Following extensive public and government review, the Report recommends EPA approval, citing evidence that anticipated environmental conditions can be met.
